The Coastal Villages
The Heritage coast line of North Yorkshire is one that fascinates all our visitors. Within walking distance of Whitby, about 6 miles along the cliff top with wonderful views is Robin Hood`s Bay full of stories of smugglers of yesteryear. The houses cling to the cliff side in a most uncanny way and in the past have indeed fallen into the sea. It is a haven for artists and photographers and a sheer delight to just wander among the twisty streets and alleyways. Sample a pint in the pub that boasts that a bowsprit of a ship has broken through it's window! Yes it really is that close to the sea. A visit to Robin Hood's Bay is a trip back through time.

DO NOT MISS IT

Another walk along the cliff top in the opposite direction will take you to Runswick Bay, a little further this time, perhaps eight or nine miles. Don't worry, you can drive there or catch a bus if you prefer. This bay whose inhabitants used to rely on fishing for their livelihood, is now mostly populated by holiday makers but it is such a pretty little place that it must  feature on anyone's list of places to visit.
Here also the north sea has been at work eroding the cliffs and in the 1660s the entire village with the exception of one house, slipped into the sea. Miraculously not a single life was lost.

Runswick Bay
As you wander among the lanes and cottages of this wonderful village, it sometimes seems that you may be trespassing on someone's property, don't worry, unless you have jumped a fence or entered a garden through a gate you will be fine. It's just that the village makes you feel that there are no boundaries.
